Planning family beach photos can feel a little overwhelming. You're already packing for vacation, coordinating outfits, and trying to make everyone happy at the same time. As a Pensacola Beach family photographer (and mom of three myself), I always tell families the same thing: simple is better.
The goal of your beach session is not perfectly matching outfits or stiff poses. It’s about capturing genuine moments together while enjoying some of the most beautiful beaches along the Gulf Coast.
What to Wear for Beach Photos? Start with Soft, Neutral Colors
The beach provides a gorgeous natural backdrop with soft blues, sea oats, white sand, and sunset tones. Neutral and earthy colors photograph beautifully without distracting from your family’s faces and connection.
Some of my favorite color combinations for beach photos include:
Creams and whites
Soft blues
Tan and khaki
Sage green
Dusty rose
Light denim
Muted coastal colors
I usually recommend avoiding:
Neon colors
Large logos
Super busy patterns
Bright athletic wear
Matching everyone exactly
Instead of identical outfits, think “coordinated.” This approach allows everyone to express their style while still looking harmonious together.
Dress for the Wind
One thing many visitors don’t realize about Pensacola Beach is that we almost always have some breeze. This can actually make photos beautiful and natural when planned correctly.
Flowy dresses photograph wonderfully in beach wind, especially at sunset. For little girls, dresses with movement always look beautiful. For men and boys, lightweight linen or soft cotton shirts tend to photograph best and stay comfortable in the Florida heat.
If someone in the family has long hair, I always recommend bringing:
A brush
A few bobby pins
Hairspray
A backup hair tie
Trust me on this one. It can save a lot of stress during the session!
Barefoot Is Usually Best
Most beach sessions look the most natural when everyone is barefoot. High heels tend to sink into the sand, and shoes often become more distracting than helpful.
Simple sandals are totally fine for walking to the location, but many families end up kicking them off once we begin shooting. Embrace the natural beach vibe!
Think About Sunset Timing
Most of my Pensacola Beach sessions take place during golden hour—the hour before sunset when the lighting becomes soft, flattering, and glowy.
That means:
Less squinting
Softer skin tones
Cooler temperatures
Prettier sky colors
More relaxed kids
Depending on the time of year, sessions may begin earlier or later in the evening. Planning around this time can make a world of difference in your photos.
Don’t Stress About Perfect Kids
This may be the most important advice of all. Some of the best beach photos happen during the in-between moments:
Kids running barefoot
Parents laughing
Wind blowing hair everywhere
Sandy toes
Little ones being silly
As both a teacher and mom, I know children don’t always want to stand still and smile on command—and honestly, they don’t need to. My sessions are relaxed, flexible, and focused on natural connection rather than stiff posing.
Favorite Locations Around Pensacola Beach
Some of my favorite locations for family sessions include:
Fort Pickens (we can get two looks here: brick arches and beach!)
Pensacola Beach dunes
Navarre Beach Pier and dunes
Perdido Key Johnson's Beach
Orange Beach near the pass—beautiful boardwalk, huge rocks, and dunes
Gulf Shores State Park Pier
Each location offers a slightly different look depending on lighting, crowds, and the time of year. Exploring these spots can add variety and charm to your family photos.
Tips for a Successful Session
Prepare the Kids
Before the session, talk to your kids about what to expect. Let them know it’s a fun time to play and be together. You might even consider bringing along a favorite toy or snack to keep their spirits high.
Stay Hydrated
The Florida sun can be intense. Make sure everyone drinks plenty of water before and during the session. Staying hydrated keeps everyone feeling good and looking fresh.
Embrace the Moment
During the session, focus on enjoying the time together. The more relaxed you are, the more natural your photos will be. Don’t worry about every little detail; just be present and enjoy the experience.
Final Thoughts
Beach family photos should feel fun—not stressful. My goal is always to help families enjoy the experience while creating images that feel natural, timeless, and full of personality.
If you’re planning a vacation along the Gulf Coast and thinking about booking a session, I’d love to help you choose the perfect location and timing for your family. Together, we can create beautiful memories that you will cherish for years to come.
